Vehicles
In addition to Skycam
16, WNEP-TV 16 The News Station uses over 25 other vehicles to bring you news
and programs from all over Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. This includes over a
dozen cars, 3 Mobile Newsrooms, a satellite truck, and a production truck.
WNEP-TV 16 The News Station has a fleet of news cars used by Reporters and
Photographers to go to the places that news is happening.
WNEP-TVs Mobile Newsrooms allow us to bring you reports LIVE from most
of Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. A Mobile Newsroom is a large van that contains
everything a reporter and photographer need to bring the story to you, including video
editing machines and computers that are linked to our Main Newsroom.
These vans are equipped with a large mast that can be raised several stories
high. On top of this mast is a microwave transmitter that sends a signal to one of our
three microwave receivers located across the viewing area. A Photographer can connect a
video camera to the truck and send that signal back to WNEP-TV 16 The News Station
where we can put it on the air instantly. The result: you see news as it is happening.
One of our Mobile Newsrooms also has a camera mounted to the top of the mast. This
allows us to give an Eagle-eye view of the scene.
WNEP-TV 16 The News Station also has a satellite truck.
Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania is known for its mountainous terrain.
Sometimes this terrain can prevent a Mobile Newsroom from getting a signal back to the
station. In those cases we send out the satellite truck. It has a large transmitter dish
on the roof that sends the signal 22,500 miles to one of several satellites in orbit
around the Earth. The satellites then relay that signal back to WNEP-TV 16 The News
Station where we can put it on the air LIVE. Because the satellites are so high, our
satellite truck could send a signal back to Pennsylvania from anywhere in the US.
Our Production truck is essentially a television station on
wheels. We have taken all the equipment you would normally find in a control
room and put it in the back of a large truck. Sporting events, telethons, and breaking
news can be produced and covered completely on location.
